Legal AI Fluency Goes Mainstream: BARBRI Acquires Lega; EU Staggers AI Act Deadlines

Meta Description: BARBRI acquires legal AI platform Lega to accelerate AI fluency in legal training; Candle AI partners with Docketwise for inbox case intelligence; Litera launches cloud metadata scrubber Clean+; EU delays high-risk AI Act deadlines to 2027/2028.

AI in the Bar Exam: BARBRI Acquires Lega to Test Practical AI Skills

In a major consolidation of legal training and professional development, BARBRI, a global leader in legal education and bar examination preparation (Bar Prep), announced the acquisition of Lega, an enterprise platform specializing in experiential AI simulations, workshops, and governance labs.

With this acquisition, BARBRI is signaling a major shift: practical AI proficiency is transitioning from a theoretical elective to a mandatory tested competency for professional licensing. Christian Lang, the founder and CEO of Lega, has joined BARBRI as the newly created Head of Innovation. Lang will lead the integration of Lega’s hands-on simulations directly into BARBRI’s core bar preparation programs, CLE (Continuing Legal Education) courses, and enterprise law firm training suites. This means future legal professionals will be tested on their ability to use and govern AI tools as part of passing their licensing exams.

For law firms and corporate legal departments, this acquisition means that standardized, structured training programs to get junior attorneys up to speed on legal AI tools will soon become the baseline norm.

Candle AI Partners with Docketwise to Streamline Workflows

In a key productivity integration for specialized legal teams, Candle AI announced a partnership with immigration case management platform Docketwise (part of MyCase and AffiniPay’s 8am platform).

Immigration practices are notoriously email-heavy, requiring continuous coordination with clients and government agencies. By integrating Candle AI’s “inbox intelligence” directly with Docketwise, immigration attorneys can now view active matter contexts, client details, and case statuses inside Gmail or Outlook. This eliminates the persistent “toggle tax” of switching between tools, allowing lawyers to generate accurate, context-aware email replies in seconds.

Security Upgrades: Litera Launches Clean+ Cloud Metadata Scrubber

Outbound document security is a persistent vulnerability for small and mid-sized businesses. To address this, Litera announced the launch of Clean+, a cloud-hosted evolution of its Metadact server.

Clean+ acts as a security filter that automatically scrubs hidden metadata—such as author history, tracked edits, and deleted comments—from outgoing email attachments. By shifting this capability to the cloud, Clean+ allows businesses to enforce a unified document security policy across desktop Outlook, web apps, and mobile clients without the need to maintain complex on-premises servers.

EU Staggers the AI Act: High-Risk Deadlines Delayed

The European Union has officially approved a significant update to the implementation timeline of the EU AI Act. Through a newly introduced Digital Omnibus package, the EU has delayed key compliance obligations for “high-risk” AI systems:

  • Standalone high-risk systems (such as AI used in credit scoring, hiring, or critical services) now have a compliance deadline of December 2, 2027 (pushed back from August 2, 2026).
  • Embedded high-risk systems (integrated into medical devices, machinery, or toys) have their deadline extended to August 2, 2028.

Crucial Caveat for Businesses: The delay does not apply to transparency rules. Requirements to disclose human interaction, detect deepfakes, and apply visible/machine-readable watermarks for AI-generated content still become mandatory on August 2, 2026.
